Corneal Procedures

The cornea is the front surface of the eye, and there are many disease processes that can affect the cornea. Our corneal specialist Drew Salisbury, M.D. performs corrective surgeries such as corneal transplants for corneas that have lost their clarity. This complex surgery involves procuring a donor cornea from the Alabama or Mississippi Eye Bank. Then in the OR carefully removing the patient’s diseased cornea and suturing into place the new corneal tissue. This delicate procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and typically takes about one hour. The healing time can run for many months sometimes up to a year. Sutures are removed in the office. Many times other procedures can be used that are somewhat less invasive are successful in restoring vision.
