JAMES D. SUTTON, M.D.
Dr. Sutton is the founder, CEO and Chief Surgeon of Mississippi Eye Associates. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Sutton is an Eagle Scout, and a recipient of the God and Country Award.
He is a graduate of Eastern High School where he earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as the school’s first Battalion Commander of their Army ROTC unit. During this time, he started the school’s rifle team. After graduation, he attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington. While studying pre-optometry / pre-med, he was a member of the University of Kentucky Rifle team, helping to win the SEC tournament in Fort Benning, Georgia, his freshman year.
Dr. Sutton was accepted to the University of Houston, College of Optometry in the Spring of 1979 and attended Optometry School for two years before dropping out to return to Lexington to attend medical school. Graduating in 1985, he moved to New Orleans and served as an Intern in Internal Medicine at the Alton Oschner Medical Foundation. He served a three year residency in Ophthalmology at the Louisiana State University, School of Medicine, finishing in 1989. It was during this time that Dr Sutton met is wife, Jane and they were married during his second year of eye training.
After graduation, Dr. Sutton studied advanced cataract techniques under his mentor, Dr. Dan Pope in Bradenton, Florida. In the summer of 1990, Dr. Sutton and his wife moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi where they opened the Ocean Springs Eye Center, later changing the name to Mississippi Eye Associates. Over the last 21 years, Dr. Sutton has built a Center of Excellence for Cataract Surgery and has performed over 15,000 cataract and implant surgeries. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Ocean Springs Outpatient and Endoscopy Center, and has served in that position since 2002..
Dr. Sutton is Board Certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Henry Semple, M.D.
Dr. Semple was raised in Mobile, Alabama where he attended grade school through high school. He went on to complete his college degree at the University of Alabama prior to attending medical school at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
He graduated from medical school with honors and proceeded to his internship year at Ochsner Hospital prior to completing his three-year residency training in ophthalmology at the LSU Eye Center and Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He completed his retinal fellowship at UC Davis in Sacramento and then returned to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama.
Dr. Semple entered practice in Mobile with Premier Medical in 1990. For many years he was the only full time vitreo-retinal surgeon serving the Alabama/Mississippi coastal region during which time he introduced many innovative and pioneering surgical procedures to the area.
Other professional interests and involvement include serving on numerous boards including president of the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology, Councilor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
